Eoghan Harris is a world-class gimp

Eoghan Harris serves as the wafer-thin layer of pseudo-intellectuality that lies on top of the Sindo's mission to provide comfort and praise to the powerful while attacking the powerless and voiceless. Naturally enough, this frequently requires him to engage in some rather liberal use of logic and facts. His modus operandi is to hide the manifest stupidity of his arguments behind a lot of huff and puff about how smart he is and the depth of his political experience.

His most recent article provides a good demonstration of his style:
"Most major Irish political stories have some connection, no matter how slight, with the national question. As I shall now demonstrate by taking the two top political and cultural stories of the past week - the Mr 'A' rape case and the Ken Loach film, The Wind that Shakes the Barley ."
It is written in the style of a proper academic paper, where one's claims are clearly set out in advance and the body of the work is devoted to demonstrating the correctness of the claims. At this stage, we should point out that the Mr A rape case has absolutely nothing to do with the national question (child sexual abuse != national question) while the Ken Loach film (Irish war of independence) is so bloody obviously about the national question that only an idiot would feel the need to "demonstrate" it in order to show their wisdom. Harris is that idiot.

Claim 1: The Mr. A rape case was connected to the national question

Harris starts in the only way he could, by dismissing the facts: "We need not dwell on the details of the Mr 'A' case." Considering the nature of his claim, one could only agree with him that the facts would surely be unhelpful to his case.

Instead, he sets out his stall to defend the minister: "It is ridiculous to regard it as a resigning matter". Why is this opinion ridiculous? He doesn't say. Maybe because there is no such thing as a resigning offence in Irish politics? Maybe because it is Harris's job to defend PD ministers regardless of what they do? Who knows.

But where are the provos? They eventually arrive via Fine Gael and Frank Connolly. Harris implies that the whole thing was some sort of excuse to get at McDowell over his treatment of Connolly:
"Behind the media mob, gangs of greenies were trying to settle scores with the minister who flushed out Frank Connolly. So it was surprising to find Jim O'Keeffe of Fine Gael coming to Connolly's defence. Frank is no friend of Fine Gael."
Aha. QED, I think not.

Claim 2: Ken Loach's film is connected to the national question
"The Wind that Shakes the Barley has more legs. Behind the hype lies the huge hinterland of the national question. "
It's a film about the war of independence and the subsequent partition of Ireland and civil war. Of course it's about the "national question" you moron.

Once again, in making his astonishingly obvious point, Harris characteristically lets us know that he's going to be ignoring the facts: "a film I have not seen"

Then he gets to his point, he doesn't like lefties and Loach is a leftie. However, Loach is also English, so this english leftie making a film about Ireland is neo-colonialism.
"Ignoring Ireland's real interests in order to promote a leftist line in British politics is neocolonialism by any name."
No it's not Eoghan. It's nothing at all like neo-colonialism. It's making a film with a particular point of view about a historical event. How Harris can possibly think this is equivalent to exercising political control over an ex-colonial nation is beyond me (without copious drugs to enable the Harris-like nether regions of consciousness). The claim is so stupid that you can't even really argue against it since the two acts - making a film and controlling a foreign country politically - are so ridiculously dissimilar that you don't even know what to compare. Head bangingly stupid.

Finally, one last piece of top-drawer idiocy:
"Finally, can I beg the barley shakers to stop calling Loach's film "controversial"? How can it be "controversial" when everybody in the Irish establishment is ecstatic about it."
The ridiculous thing about this is that in our media-dominated world, controversy is created by media-pundits, and as the Sindo's resident pseudo-intellectual, Harris is pretty much top of the punditocracy establishment. His assertion thus has two clear factual contradictions within it. It becomes even wronger still (and considerably more stupid too) when you realise that in the very same edition there is an article about the controversy - showing how UK tabloids had carried entirely different takes on it in their Irish and English editions. What's more, Harris's fellow resident of the punditocracy establishment, Ruth Dudley Edwards, had denounced the film the previous day.

How can he be so stupid?

Very well summed up mate! Hehe.

Greets to the webmaster of this wonderful site. Keep working. Thank you.

Superb article!

Harris really is an annoying, pathetic little flunky whose articles are poorly researched and bile-driven. The amount of self-praise he manages to cram into them is also hilarious.

Eoghan Harris
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eoghan Harris is an Irish newspaper crank who contributes to the Sunday Independent newspaper. Harris was educated at University College, Cork where he took a First in history. He later worked at RTE, the Irish television broadcaster, where he most notably produced an afternoon show called GOING STRONG, for OAPs.

Harris was a friend of leading Official Sinn Fein members and unrepentant Stalinists Eamonn Smullen and Cathal Goulding and wrote their election maniefsto on one occasion. According to an article in Magill magazine (November 1997) Harris formed a branch of Sinn Fein the Workers Party (which Official Sinn Fein had become). People working in RTE could join this branch known as the 'Ned Stapleton Cumann'. It was believed that Sinn Fein the Workers Party, nicknamed the "Stickies" exercised great influence within RTE during the 1970s and 1980s. Michael O'Leary, then leader of the Labour Party, rightly commented that RTE current affairs coverage was "Stickie orientated". Sinn Fein the Workers Party followed Marxist Leninist policies throughout that period. In 1989 Harris ended his involvement with the party after a policy disagreement, when he turned into a right-wing nut following the collapse of his beloved Eastern Bloc.

He became friendly with Fine Gael leader John Bruton - best known for his cringeworthy toadying to Britain's Prince Charles at a state function in the 1990s - because of their shared opposition to the Provisional IRA. Harris received significant press criticism in April 1991 when he wrote the script for a sketch for the Fine Gael Ard Fheis in which Twink camped up the toilet roll 'ad lady' and lampooned an incident involving Una Claffey, an RTE reporter, and TD, Ned O'Keeffe.[1]

Harris worked as a consultant to Mary Robinson on the 1990 presidential election campaign. In 1997 Harris denounced Fianna Fail presidential candidate Mary McAleese, calling her a "tribal time bomb" and writing "if she wins not on a technicality but because so many people gave her their number one, then I am living in a country I no longer understand". McAleese won a landslide victory. In a subsequent RTE TV interview with John Bowman, Harris said that he had been wrong in his opinion of Mary McAleese. What a twat!

In the late 1990s he became a political advisor to David Trimble, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party. In the 2005 elections the UUP lost all but one of its Westminster seats. Harris' involvement with the party has since ended.

Harris strongly supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In May 2003 he wrote "already as I predicted in the lead up to the war, the neoconservative hawks have done much better than the liberals in getting down to the dynamics of opening up the Gulf to democracy. Already, and this I predicted too, there is substantial hope for an Israeli-Palestinian settlement, now that Saddam no longer scowls at Israel". He has been bitterly critical of Middle East journalist Robert Fisk. In November 2003 he wrote. "Far from wanting to pour venom on Fisk, I think he does us a favour by being so forthright. For my money his analysis of Middle East politics is a first cousin to believing that aliens take away people in flying saucers". Make up your own mind who is right about world affairs.

Not to mention the equally nauseating flattery of media chums he goes in for: "Annoyed that Sean's stomach appears flatter than mine . . . " This is Eoghan sucking up to Seán O'Rourke (fer God's sake) in a Sindo column. Yeeuuuccchhhh!!!

A pompous sermonizer who likes to think he goes against the grain, but who in fact cosies up to the powerful any chance he gets. This usually pays well, of course. So he trots out any line Tony O'Reilly the West Brit wants to see in his "newspapers". Before that, Harris was embedded in the broadcasting establishment, censoring news and current affairs at RTE so it came across as anti-nationalist. Some rebel! Have you come across his leaden Plato-vs.-Aristotle "analysis"? He reads like an autodidact with too much time on his hands, prosing on about his latest reading. Yawn... An insufferable bore.

personally i think your an idiot even though his politics makes me very angry. he is a very intresting and itelligent man and the fact that you hata use gimp in your title and couldnt think of something more intelligent, says it all

Excellent Blog

The little piece of shit has got his payback today from Bertie.

Harris' performance on TV was sickening in the run up to the election and what was worse was no one contested his views that night, not even the great (?) Eamon Dunphy. Well following his glowing references to Aherne both on the Late Late Show & again in the Sunday Independent hes been appointed to the Seanad !!!!!

How transparent is this... and of course berties new lap dogs The Greens are bending over and getting the Vaseline ready.

This is the most corrupt .. sickening .. shithole of a country to live in.

The people have got the government they deserve

I read in one of the comments above "Anonymous said...

Bit ironic that, anonymous scolding people for being anonymous ...

Yours anonymously,
Sean Swan

Harris is bought & paid for. Loyal to the half crown. Left Sin Fein to join Me Fein.

"Harris is bought & paid for. Loyal to the half crown. Left Sin Fein to join Me Fein."

Couldn't agree more. Harris appears to change his mind like a child in a sweet shop. He's pretty much crossed the divide politically, and I wouldn't be surprised if he does another U-turn depending on which newspaper he's writing for!

As for the film, there's a lot of bitterness about his own failed script for a Michael Collins film (which sounded disastrous as scripts go) in his distaste for anything historical and cinematic in an Irish context.

Well done on the blog post - nice to see some people aren't taken in by that pack of morons writing for that rag on Sundays...

I know his brother hes the same but very funny too

Eoghan Harris has a hissy fit on TV

Having suffered Harrris' nauseating performance on the LL Show, I can only ask what we ever did to deserve such a this. This gombeen is paid from the public purse to act as bum boy for the corrupt creep who put him there. There is an excuse for the likes of JH Rae, a genuine gombeen, but there is no excuse for this scumbag who should know better - but maybe this is what is wrong. Could I be right? Is this what the problem really is. Is this out true identity? He said tonight the Ahern is not corrupt, not realising that he himself is the epitome of the disease. Harris is a disgrace to his country and a disgrace to Cork. Lower than this does not crawl the depths of deprivation. I hope he rots in hell with Ahern when his day comes.
